L Scully

Everyone is so old these days.
Girls have hair the color that
flowers used to be or dress
like their Nanas who really
were born when the grass
was still green. Gardening
the antique in a pleated
skirt, it’s a wonder we get
anything done. Shoveling
dirt with our septum rings,
fertilizing beds with broken
nails and skin flakes, watering
our prizes with alcohol-free
beer. Maybe we raze the tennis
courts and keep swimming down
until we reach the catacombs which
house our childhood dogs, or lava so
hot our fingertips prune. In the internal
volcano everyone is old because they’ve
been granted the promise of fossilization, which
might be as close to heaven as some women get.
